The African Development Fund and the OPEC fund for International Development will jointly fund a US$5 million loan to improve water and sanitation services in the town of Mzimba. The investment will help overhaul the city’s ageing water supply system that has become severely stretched due to a growing population. The current capacity of 1,500 cubic metres a day falls short of the 2,600 cubic metres of demand it receives, leaving residents with only six to 12 hours of service, in a coverage area of only 65 percent. The project will also support the Mzimba Town Council to prepare its Sanitation and Hygiene Investment Plan and Strategy.
