On 28 May, World Menstrual Hygiene day was celebrated in over 30 countries. The campaign’s main goal and vision is to create a world in which every woman and girl can manage her menstruation in a hygienic way–wherever she is–in privacy, safety and with dignity. Campaign organisers, an initiative of Wash United, said the activities on the day helped break the silence and build awareness about the fundamental role that good menstrual hygiene management plays in enabling women and girls to reach their full potential. One activity run by Water Aid involved women on social media listing the dread of #perioddrama to raise awareness around it. More than 1 billion women around the world do not have access to a toilet, even when they’re on their period.
