Eight innovative water treatment technologies to help Mediterranean hotels reduce water consumption have proved successful in the project demonstration site in Spain. As part of the demEAUmed project, eight technologies were tested at demonstration level, and have proved to be fully capable of treating hotel greywater and wastewater. Dr Gianluigi Bittiglieri, the scientific coordinator, believes that this will lead to eventual market uptake and reduction of water consumption in hotels based around the Mediterranean. A survey conducted by demEAUmed revealed that minimising water costs is the main reason why hotel managers/owners would reduce water consumption. Water recycling treatment is considered the most interesting solution provided the investment does not exceed €10,000.
